Jim-E Stack could have not kicked off 2012 any stronger. His newest EP “Come Between” is super tight and entrancing. This Wednesday, February 1st, all of Webster Hall will be celebrating the release of “Come Between” with a little help from NIKKO, Mess Kid and Azizaman.

Look forward to the upcoming Staygold LP, which has been more than a long time coming. Some of you might recognize this song from the Swedish P3 Gold Awards, where Spank Rock and Damien Adore appeared, and Robyn sang Lady Tigra’s part. This album has got to be one of my favorites of the last 5 years, and I can’t wait until it is properly released (on Magnetron Records home of acts like Le Le), so I’m not the only one raving about them all the time. Sleeping is for cats, people.

“Shine,” a standout track from our latest release by young Danish wunderkind, ELOQ, just got a lovely video treatment. Previously known for his work with Danish rap phenom KIDD, ELOQ’s star just keeps rising (check his remix for Medina). The Mysterious EP, his second solo release (following last year’s release on Opiate’s Hobby Industries label), is out now on boomkat (and anywhere else digital music is sold).

As an extra treat, Palms Out fam Dixone (whose Belligerent EP is still turning heads), comes in with a free remix of “Shine” – where he drops the tempo, and veers into reggaeton territory, to great effect.

Could you give us some info about your history with music?

I grew up in Peru, rotating between SF and Lima throughout the year. Living in South America really exposed me to the sounds that have shaped the music I’m into now.

I was a band kid for a good part of my life, playing the saxophone in various jazz bands and orchestras. I was listening to a lot of hip-hop also, so naturally I started digging for jazz records. My interest for dance music was also growing, so eventually I started DJing. Being a DJ feels a lot cooler than being a band kid.

For the past couple years, I’ve been DJing with a good homie under SOSOSOON. Along the way, I’ve been able to meet a lot of great people. I help run a marketing agency with my older sister, so the overlap between music and our work is creating some really exciting opportunities. The business and creative sides of music don’t always get to interact as much as I think they should, but that’s paving the way for what’s to come. I got some tricks up my sleeve.

There seem to be a lot of new labels popping up at the moment, could you tell us which ones are catching your ear?

It’s really great to see all these labels grow, especially in the USA, with Body High and Fade 2 Mind. Samo Soundboy and Jerome LOL Boys have done an great job at curating the Body High sound; its music made for the club. There’s a lot of stuff coming from those guys in the future that I’m really excited about. Fade 2 Mind has also been holding it down for America. They’ll be putting out EP’s from Cedaa and Clicks & Whistles that are going to be really good. There’s another dope label coming out of Chile called Diamante. The South American homies have some really nice stuff brewing over there.

What other artists are you currently feeling?

There’s a lot of exciting music coming out right now, but there are definitely some artists that stand out; they’ve been able to define their sound, yet still continue to explore it. Dubbel Dutch has consistently been on the top of my list for a while now. Brenmar has been making club bangers for females, dancefloor killers. There’s a group of young cats who’s sound has been maturing very nicely as well. Cedaa has been making some great music for a while. The kid Jim-E Stack has a great EP coming out this week I believe. Astronomar is also a name you’ll want to pay attention to.

San Francisco has been busy in 2011, do you feel that living in a city with a healthy scene gives you an edge?

Living in a city with a “scene” is really important in any creative project. You’re constantly influenced by your surroundings, so having a creative environment definitely inspires your ideas, subconsciously more than anything. For how much we like to complain about SF, there’s a lot of great things going on here. The Icee Hot and Lights Down Low parties have brought pretty much every artist you’d want to see in the “bass” world. I think we have some momentum that is going to continue to grow, until we all move to New York at least.

Can you give us some context to this mix?

I recorded this mix at 4am in New York City. It’s a collection of songs I’ve been vibing to this winter. Some older stuff, some new stuff, some stuff that’s not out. Deep winter vibes you can chill to, dance to, or fuck to. I hope you do all three to it at some point.

Last month I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Cedaa, a young and exciting artist that is making great music and getting some much deserved early attention. Cedaa just made an amazing mix for XLR8R and broke into the New York scene with a strong CMJ showcase. I was thrilled when he agreed to do a small interview, and mp3 download.

What were some of your music influences growing up in Seattle? What music from Seattle influenced your music?

Proximity to water has always been a big influence. I grew up on a small island just to the east of Seattle. 15 minutes from downtown, but still slightly remote. I worked at a beach club, spent my summers in the water. I love caustics, like on the cover of “Tiffany”. Sir mix-a-lot.

What was your favorite album in 2011? Favorite song?

Pacheko – Lamissy. Couldn’t say about a favorite album, I have a short attention span.

Who are some artists you think people should look out for?

Here are a few labels instead: Fade 2 Mind, Body High, Diamante, B.YRSLF, Pelican Fly. Full support to crews doing big things.

If you could collaborate with any artist who? and Why?

1996 Timbaland. He had a good year.

Worst job you ever had?

Last year, my school’s cafeteria.

The Hundreds dropped this free 11 tracks release from Gilbere Forte last month and I been listening to it a bunch over the last couple days. I’m really feelin’ it! Depsite a few weird moments (heavy metal guitars never belong in rap joints) this release comes really strong. Women:  The Size does matter, Men: Whatever Whatever.

Eats Everything has been on a hot streak lately with his popular track “Entrance Song” and his collabo with with Worthy, “Tric Trac”. Now he’s got his own EP coming up on Dirtybird.

The first track “The Size”, with its powerful break, lives up to its name, lending itself well to big rooms. The strings should be familiar to anyone who has seen the movie The Beach. I had a small chat with Eats Everything and he remembers the movie as “the one with Leonardo DiCaprio” – Don’t get me wrong, Leo’s great, but there are some really lovely ladies in that movie too…!

CMJ has never really made sense to me. A bunch of bands, acts and DJs performing a week long festival in NYC. It is hardly the place to host a festival. Isn’t there always lots of acts all year around at very close venues? Where CMJ can succeed is by showcasing more than up and coming acts, but perhaps a new idea. Thus, BPM 2011 is born. This event is about show casing new and innovative minds that are pioneering a unique pulse, that is the backbone of genres already formed. The pride in this group is the fact that it is not definable, a product, or package. Enjoy some preview music below, and we hope to see you this Friday.
